As we approach the end of the school year, it’s important for students to stay engaged, attend school, and finish strong! Visit our website for attendance resources.

  • 🖍️ It’s Kindergarten Registration Time!

Attending kindergarten provides children with an opportunity to learn and practice the essential social, emotional, problem-solving, and self-regulation skills they will use throughout their lives. Eligible children can also be registered throughout the summer, but registering your child early helps us plan, so that we have the teachers and resources needed on the first day of school.

We are happy to support families with registration and the transition to kindergarten. For more information in other languages, visit FCPS’ Kindergarten Registration webpage.

The regulation provides guidance for schools on how to manage requests for silent reflection during instructional and non-instructional time, and for students to leave school for religious activities.

These spaces are for individuals to engage in prayer, meditation, or silent reflection, inclusive of their religious or non-religious beliefs. Parents/caregivers must provide written permission for students requesting to miss instructional time on a regular basis. Families are encouraged to contact [the principal/family liaison/their child’s teacher] regarding accommodations. View Regulation 1502. Dear Panther Families,

We had another action-packed week full of learning and music! Our chorus performed their Spring concert this past Wednesday and our first graders showed off their musical talent during their grade level performance.

Our second graders' field trip  today was full of exploration at the Lego Discovery Center. It is wonderful to be able to have our students learning in new and creative ways through all of their field trips. We are so thankful that our PTO sponsors many of these trips.

I hope you all have a wonderful and restful weekend. I am grateful for all of your continued support.

Sincerely,

Kid's Heart Challenge

We are excited to let you know that we will be doing the KHC/AHA (Kid’s Heart Challenge/American Heart Association) again this year on April 25th. Heart disease continues to be an issue and one of the best ways to help fight it is by exercising. This year will consist of 3 different stations. Using a Hulu Hoop, running, and a homerun derby. Of course, there will be a cold treat afterwards! All families are welcome and encouraged to come and support all the participants.

Registration is free for the event and all students who register will receive a wrist band. Both the SHES P.E. Department and AHA encourage you to donate if you feel comfortable doing so. All donations will go towards fighting heart disease and help us purchase new PE equipment. The Spring Hill Community was tremendous last year with supporting this event/cause and we hope this year is the same. We thank you for all your support!

Schedule:

6th Grade – 9:15am to 9:55am

5th Grade- 10:15am to 10:55am

Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Services Internal Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024. Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of School Health services. The data-driven process is in alignment with the FCPS Strategic planning process, and the survey results will contribute positively to the FCPS Strategic Plan that reflects a shared consensus among stakeholders.

Reflection & Silent Spaces

FCPS has developed Regulation 1502 to ensure all students and staff have reasonable accommodation and access to meditation and silent reflection spaces within the school division.

Visit FCPS' Guidelines for Religious Activities webpage for more information.

A Note from Principal Briggs

Dear Panther Families,

Our 4th grade oceans fashion show was such a creative way to celebrate the ocean and end the week! The costumes were incredible!

A huge congratulations to SHES Teams A and B for their phenomenal second-place finishes at the Virginia State Odyssey of the Mind competition in the Problems category! This  achievement earns them a spot at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals! We are incredibly proud of their dedication, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

Grade Level Adventures!

Our curious learners were busy exploring this week!

  • 3rd Grade: Journeyed back in time with a trip to the Natural History Museum, where they marveled at dinosaurs and unearthed fascinating discoveries.
  • 4th Grade: Stepped into history with a visit to Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. We're sure they learned valuable lessons about our nation's founding fathers.
  • 5th Grade: Enjoyed a captivating performance at the Alden Theater. We hope it sparked their love for the performing arts!

Mark Your Calendars: Kid's Heart Challenge!

Looking ahead, we're gearing up for the exciting Kid's Heart Challenge on April 25th! This is a fantastic opportunity for students to learn about heart health, participate in physical activities, and raise funds for a worthy cause. Stay tuned for more information!

Congratulations again to our Odyssey of the Mind teams and all our curious explorers! Keep up the fantastic work, SHES!

Sincerely,

Amy Briggs

Kid's Heart Challenge

We are excited to let you know that we will be doing the KHC/AHA (Kid’s Heart Challenge/American Heart Association) again this year on April 25th.

Schedule:

Understanding Different Types of Hurtful Behavior

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, one out of every five (20.2%) students report being bullied. It is no wonder that bullying is on the forefront of many caregivers' minds. But with so much talk about bullying, sometimes caregivers and students call behavior “bullying” that is actually not. Below are explanations of different types of hurtful behavior.

Rude - When someone says or does something unintentionally hurtful.  Rude words or actions are usually spontaneous, unplanned inconsideration, based on thoughtlessness or poor manners or narcissism, but not meant to actually hurt someone.

Mean - When someone says or does something intentionally hurtful and they do it once or twice

Bullying is defined in the FCPS Students Rights and Responsibilities as, “Any aggressive and unwanted behavior that is intended to harm, intimidate, or humiliate the victim; involves a real or perceived power imbalance between the aggressor or aggressors and victim; and is repeated over time or causes severe emotional trauma. “Bullying” includes cyberbullying. “Bullying” does not include ordinary teasing, horseplay, argument, or peer conflict.”

Our Spring Hill School Counselors teach students the acronym, BOO, to remember the definition of bullying.

B - Being mean

O - On Purpose

O - Over and Over

SHES VASO Division A and Division B - Team Formation for 2024

SHES VASO Division A and Division B - Team Formation for 2024

The Virginia Science Olympiad (VASO) is a great opportunity for kids passionate about science to team up with their schoolmates and compete against great minds from schools all across VA. The three VASO divisions include Division A - Grades 3 through 5, Division B - Grades 5 through 8 and Division C - Grades 9 through 12. For Elementary school, the relevant divisions are A and B. A fifth grader can participate in Division A or B (but not both) in any given year. In 2023, for Div A, Spring Hill Mavericks was the highest scoring team in VA with 14 medals and Spring Hill Wizards had 12 medals.

Currently, we are soliciting interest from parents for participation in Division A (Grades 3-5) and Div B (Grades 5-8). You can find out more details about the type of events for Division A and Division B here

https://www.virginiaso.org/div-a

https://www.virginiaso.org/div-bc

The fundamental difference for a 5th grader is - in division A they will participate against their peers in schools all over Virginia in grades three through five whereas is in division B they will compete with middle school and fifth and sixth grade elementary school kids all over Virginia.

SHES can have up to 3 teams for each Division and each team can have up to 15 kids. Being a primarily parent led effort, we need parent coaches and volunteers to support the preparatory and participatory needs of the Division A and B team(s).

Typically, for Div A, the commitment will be to work individually with your kids starting now to the competition timeframe in November 2023, especially taking advantage of the summer break as well as to participate in weekly team activities once school is back in session from August to November 2023. Division B tournaments occur between December and April.

Parents will also be expected to financially contribute for the cost of competition registration, preparatory materials and travel/hotel expenses when participating in the regional competitions (within VA). Kids with a burning passion for science coupled with parents who are interested in mentoring their kids along with their kids’ teams and with flexibility participating in weekly meetings and competition related travel will be ideal candidates for the SHES team(s). We will be holding an SHES information session in the SHES library on April 18, 2023 from 4 PM to 5 PM interested parents. Look forward to seeing everyone!

A Note from Principal Briggs

Dear Panther Families,

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

Ensuring the safety of all our students is our top priority. Special eclipse glasses are required for safe viewing, and unfortunately, it wouldn't be feasible to guarantee that every student has access to a certified pair. We will not have a school-wide outside viewing. However, we will plan for a live stream viewing through NASA.

Because the timing overlaps with dismissal, it is crucial that students understand the importance of safe viewing practices. We encourage families to review these Solar Eclipse Resources, especially the eye safety information. We hope everyone takes the opportunity to learn more about this extraordinary natural phenomenon while prioritizing safe solar viewing.

Sincerely,

Amy Briggs

A Note from Principal Briggs

Dear Panther Families,

This week has been a whirlwind of wonderful school activities! We had an incredibly successful Fun Fair and can't thank our parents and teachers enough for all of your hard work to make this event memorable for all of our students! We're thrilled to share news about our talented students and exciting upcoming events.

This Week's Highlights:

  • Bravo, Orchestra! Our talented orchestra students captivated the audience with their performance of the Star Spangled Banner  at the school board meeting last night. Their dedication and musicality were truly inspiring.
  • A Star is Born! Our annual talent show today was a dazzling display of student creativity and courage. We were so impressed by all the performers, singers, dancers, and more! What a great way to end the week!

Looking Ahead:

With these exciting events behind us, we can all start looking forward to a well-deserved break! Spring Break begins next week on March 25 and runs through March 31 and our school offices will be closed. As a reminder, April 1st & 2nd are teacher workdays. ~Thursday, May 30, 2024~

This special evening brings our community together to celebrate the many cultures represented by our students, staff and families!  We hope to have as many cultures and countries (or U.S. states) represented as possible.   In the coming weeks, we will be looking for parents and families willing to teach more about their culture, country and heritage – ideas include cultural décor, food, performances, and more.    Keep your eyes open for more information about signing up to share your culture with our school community and help us transform the cafeteria into a robust Cultural Showcase!

  A FUN FAIR-SIZED THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday to our 56th annual Fun Fair! The day was a huge success, owing in large part to the more than 150 adult volunteers who tirelessly served pizza, spun cotton candy, tore tickets, and handed out tokens and prizes, among countless other tasks.  We would also like to recognize those volunteers who served on the Fun Fair planning committee with our sincere appreciation: Agnese Banerjee, Marcy Borger, Morgan Brand, Molly Budman, Thang Carpenter, Tiffaney Clinton, Katie Colosi, Kerry Desai, Anna Engel, Kate Golden, Ellen Hansen, Kelly Hare, Mollie Ifshin, Maggie Kuchner, Naima Malik, Cindy Merson, Amanda Mosher, Bill Mosher, Kathrina Ng, Erin Phillips, Andrea Richards, Hope Saadat, Sophie Townend, and Tien Tran. The day would not have been possible without you! Special thanks to Principal Briggs, all of the front office and custodial staff who assisted with the planning and execution of the day.

April 8th Solar Eclipse

A total solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8, and will be viewable, depending on weather, in Fairfax County. The eclipse will begin in our area around 2:04 p.m. and end around 4:32 p.m., with the maximum eclipse occurring around 3:20 p.m.

A Note from Principal Briggs

Dear Panther Families,

Our Parent University today was a great success!  Mr. Jeff Lonnett presented  our Portrait of a Graduate skills and how we help students build these skills to be  successful after college and beyond. Afterward, Jeff met with several of our students to ask them about their portfolios.  It was exciting to see students  reflecting of their progress, as well as how these skills are relevant to their future career choice.

Mr. Solsberry will be on leave until the end of May. Please reach out to Boutia Pourhashemi and Amy Briggs if you need support.

We are gearing up for our Talent Show next Friday, March 21. Please see our school spirit days for next week.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Amy Briggs

Our next Parent University will be held during our PTO meeting on Friday, March 15th at 9am. Jeff Lonnett will present our Portrait of a Graduate program in FCPS and how we are teaching our students valuable skills beyond college graduation.

We are gearing up for all the excitement with our annual fun fair! Please see below information on how you can volunteer.

The Langley Pyramid art show has beautiful drawings, paintings, photography, and objects displayed through the month of March!

Another exciting event we are gearing up for is our annual Fun Fair! This is event is one our students remember throughout their lives. Please sign up to volunteer if you are able. This event cannot run without your help!

As a reminder, students do not have school on Tuesday, March 5th due to voting for the Primary election.

Sincerely,

Families with new students in any grade level (K-6) can contact our front office to begin the registration process.

LightSpeed Technology

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for your children, we are excited to introduce a new tool that our teachers now have access to.

Lightspeed Software is designed to empower both teachers and students in the digital learning landscape. One of its key features is the ability for teachers to actively monitor student activity on laptops from their computer screens, fostering an environment that encourages focus and on-task behavior while teachers work with students in small groups.

We understand the importance of balancing technology in education with maintaining a focused and secure learning environment. Lightspeed Software is designed with these considerations in mind, and it will contribute significantly to the overall success of our students.

We also want to inform you that students will only be monitored during school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor your child’s activity. As parents, you are welcome to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer.

Family Engagement Survey to Open March 3

FCPS is partnering with independent research firm K12 Insight to administer a Family Engagement Survey, which will be open from Sunday, March 3, to Friday, March 22. Your feedback is critical in helping FCPS to better recognize, understand, respect, and address family strengths and needs throughout the district. Survey topics include:

  • Welcoming environment
  • Communication
  • Student success
  • Advocacy
  • Family and school partnerships
  • Community partnerships

The survey will be available in English, Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Pashto, Spanish, Urdu, and Vietnamese.

Parents/caregivers will receive the survey link via email from K12 Insight. A public link will also be posted on FCPS’ website. Paper surveys will be available in our front office. Please stay tuned for more information.

A Note from Principal Briggs

Dear Panther Families,

Throughout the month of February, we continue to honor the achievements and contributions of Black Americans within our curriculum and recognize their central role in U.S. history.

Our FCPS elementary curriculum provides teachers with instructional resources to deliver meaningful opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Black and African American people year-round and specifically during Black History Month. Some of this learning is embedded in the social studies curriculum, and additional resources and activities are provided to teachers in February.

Our student leadership team has been recognizing the contributions of Black Americans on our Morning News Show throughout each week.  These segments highlight notable examples of Black culture and excellence in history and today.

Today, we were fortunate to have Mr. Rock Steady, a Congo Percussionist  share his culture and history of Gogo music with our students. This was a wonderful event as we continue to celebrate Black History Month!

We ended our week with our first SHES Spelling Bee. Congratulations to all of our class winners and school winners. We are so proud of you!

Sincerely,

Amy Briggs

A Note from Principal Briggs

Dear Panther Families,

This week was filled with love, kindness, and service learning! I am so proud of our students who decided to spread joy through helping others! Our 6th graders made Valentine's cards for children in hospitals, our first graders put together care packages for young people experiencing homelessness, and some of our 5th graders made cards and delivered them to seniors at Sunrise Living. I truly believe kindness is contagious and hope to build our community service projects so that all students are involved!

A big thank you goes out to our amazing PTO. Our staff felt the love and enjoyed a delicious pizza lunch and heart messages from our families.

I look forward to our annual Bids-for-Kids auction tomorrow night and hope you all have a wonderful long weekend.

Sincerely,

Amy Briggs

Eating Disorder Information for parents

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.

A Note from Principal Briggs

Dear Panther Families,

This afternoon, we had a special treat where our after school Dragon Dance club paraded around the school and shared the Dragon that they constructed. This was a wonderful way to celebrate Chinese New Year!

We have more exciting events coming up the next couple of weeks. We look forward to celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week along with a 'love-themed' spirit week. We will end next week with our annual Bids for Kids. This auction is a great way to enjoy a night out with Panther parents and also put a bid in for a fabulous auction item. We hope to see you there!

As always, thank you for your continued support of Spring Hill ES.

Sincerely,

Amy Briggs

Random Acts of Kindness Week

Spring Hill Panthers will be celebrating Random Acts of Kindness Week beginning February 12th through February 16th.   Random Acts of Kindness Week was initiated by the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation.  Their mission is to make kindness the norm.  Students and staff have fun activities too look forward to during Kindness Week.

  • Students and staff can show off their kind spirit with themed spirit days next week.
  • Students and staff will be given a “# Choose Kindness” pencil to use as a reminder to be kind at home, school, and in the community.
  • Students have the chance to receive a kindness theme friendship bracelet made by a member of the Kindness Club.  Bracelets will be given to students caught doing a random act of kindness by a member of the Kindness Club.
  • Students can be the “I” in kind by standing in place of the letter “I” in front of a banner that will be hung in the main lobby.

A Note from Principal Briggs

Dear Panther Families,

It is hard to believe that February is upon us.  We ended the first semester with a fun-filled  pep rally. We celebrated the first half of the year, reviewed expectations, and had students speak to their Portrait of a Graduate Skill that they have focused on this year.

I am so proud of how many students participated in our Rise Against Hunger fundraiser.  Almost 60% of our students participated and we raised over $8749, which provides over 19,000 meals!  I look forward to seeing many of you at the meal packing event tomorrow.

As always, thank you for your continued support of Spring Hill ES.

Sincerely,

Amy Briggs

Panthers are Punctual

We realize the  scramble to get to school on time can be stressful.  However,  students who do not ride the bus  and arrive after the bell will be marked tardy. Please remember our bell rings at 8:50 am.  Students miss important morning announcements and community building when they arrive late.

Student Safety Corner

Keeping our students safe is our number # 1 priority.  Please adhere to the following:

  • Kiss & Ride is only from 8:30-8:50am. After 8:50am you must park your car in a parking spot and walk your child to the front office.
  • The Hamlet is not a designated Kiss and Ride drop-off/pick- up location.
  • The front driveway is for Buses only.

Thank you for your cooperation.
