  • Leadership Opportunities: All sixth graders are invited to join our leadership club that promotes community service, school spirit, relationships among staff and students, and authentic implementation of the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate skills. Sixth graders are also encouraged to apply for the SHES Live Crew, which designs and facilitates a live news show for the school each morning.

  • Embedded Life Skills: As part of the FCPS Portrait of a Graduate initiative, students practice metacognition through their ability to identify and reflect on their daily use and practice of life skills. These skills include being a communicator, collaborator, ethical & global citizen, creative & critical thinker, and goal-directed & resilient individual. 
  • Opportunities for Reflection: Students curate their own portfolio of work samples that travels with them throughout their elementary career. Classes engage in quarterly presentations of learning, giving students the space and opportunity to reflect on their growth each quarter, and beyond.
