Spring Hill Honors Veterans
The Spring Hill Select band performed a concert for students and veterans
Band Director Dan Freeman opened the Veterans Day assembly reminding students about the significance of the holiday and explaining why it is so significant to him and his family, who have an extensive service record. He then went on to give a brief history lesson of the day, beginning with Armistice Day, and reviewing all of the branches of the military. Finally, he implored all of the students to thank a service member or veteran today and every day.
Counselor Erin Rinker opened the concert by singing the National Anthem (beautifully!) as the band played along with her. Mr. Freeman then directed the band in military anthems, each one representing a different branch of the military. As they played, each branch's shield was displayed on the screen behind the band, and students and staff were invited to stand if they had a family member who is serving, or has served, in that branch. The students were respectful and did their best to honor all of our community's service members. It was quite a display to witness.
Finally, Spring Hill students in Mrs. Swiers's fifth grade class had the opportunity to hear from two service members - LCDR Erika Schilling and former Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy.
